Day Trip from Kraków to Morskie Oko in Winter

Zakopane, known as the “Winter Capital of Poland,” is a charming mountain town at the foot of the Tatra Mountains. Its unique wooden architecture, lively markets, and deep highlander traditions make it a must-visit destination for those looking to experience Polish culture. You’ll feel the warm hospitality of the locals, known as Górale, whose traditions and folklore have shaped the region for centuries.

Morskie Oko, located deep in the Tatra National Park, is one of Poland’s most iconic natural treasures. Surrounded by towering peaks, this glacial lake turns into a magical, frozen paradise during winter. The serene beauty of Morskie Oko has inspired countless travelers and artists, making it a symbol of Poland’s stunning natural landscapes. Visiting this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a journey into the heart of the Tatras, offering a perfect mix of adventure and tranquility.

Scenic Drive to the Tatra Mountains

Begin your day with a comfortable drive through the picturesque Polish countryside as we head towards the Tatra Mountains. Your guide will introduce you to the region’s history, culture, and traditions along the way.

Winter Hike to Morskie Oko

Once we arrive in the Tatra National Park, we’ll begin our 8 km hike through a snowy wonderland. The trail winds gently through a forest of snow-covered trees, offering breathtaking mountain views. Along the way, you’ll learn about the local flora, fauna, and legends of the Tatras. Don’t forget your camera – every step is picture-perfect!

Arrive at Morskie Oko Shelter

After approximately 2.5 hours of walking, we’ll reach the cozy shelter by the frozen Morskie Oko lake. Take in the magical views of the surrounding peaks reflected in the ice. Enjoy some free time to explore the area, sip a hot drink, and relax.

Mountain Cheese Tasting

Warm up with a traditional oscypek (smoked sheep cheese) tasting. Prepared by local highlanders, this regional delicacy is served grilled with cranberry sauce for an authentic flavor of the mountains.

Return to Kraków

After our adventure, we’ll hike back to the starting point and board the bus to return to Kraków, where you’ll arrive in the evening with incredible memories to share.

What to Bring:

• Warm, waterproof clothing and sturdy winter boots.

 Important Notes:

• This trip is suitable for anyone with moderate physical fitness. The hike is approximately 16 km round trip and takes around 5–6 hours.

• Weather conditions in the mountains can change quickly. Safety is our priority, and we’ll adjust the trip if necessary.

• This is a perfect chance to bond with fellow Erasmus students, enjoy nature, and experience the magic of the Polish mountains in winter!
